Highway Safety Unit

The Highway Safety Unit of the Winslow Township Police is dedicated to the safety of the residents of Winslow and the State of New Jersey through the professional and thorough investigation of motor vehicle crashes, the fair and impartial enforcement of the motor vehicle laws, and the inspection and oversight of highway work zones

The Traffic Unit is supervised by a Sergeant who is overseen by the Lieutenant of the Criminal Investigations Unit. The traffic unit consists of the following sections:

Crash Investigation/Traffic Enforcement: The Traffic Unit currently is staffed by two officers who investigate serious and fatal motor vehicle crashes, conduct radar and traffic enforcement, patrol in residential areas, investigates complaints of abandoned vehicles and other traffic related offenses.

School Crossing Guards: The Department staffs three part-time school crossing guards who are responsible for crossing school children at assigned intersections within Winslow School #3 and Winslow School #4.

The Traffic Unit is also responsible for the following areas within the Department:

  • The review and distribution of all traffic related records and paperwork generated within the Department.
  • All in-service training and state certification programs relating to the traffic sciences.
  • Coordinator for the State’s “Click it or Ticket” and the “Drunk Driving Enforcement Fund”. These grants are made available to place additional patrols on the street to enforce the seat belt and drunk driving laws.
  • Review Traffic control plans submitted by all contractors to insure they are in in-compliance with M.U.T.C.D (Manual Of Uniform Traffic Control Devices) to ensure the work zone is safe for motorist and contractors.
  • Review of all applications from owners of private property to have the motor vehicle laws of the State of New Jersey made applicable to the private properties under N.J.S. 39:5a-1.
  • Review of all ordinances relating to traffic within the township.
  • Coordinate bi-monthly NJ Motor Vehicle Commission checkpoints to ensure compliance with NJ motor vehicle inspection, registration, licensing, and other laws governing the roadways of the State of New Jersey.
