Camden County, N.J.-The Camden County Prosecutor’s Office is warning residents of a tax scam actively taking place in Camden County. This scam is taking place under the name of a fake agency calling itself “Tax Assessment Securities”. This agency is falsely claiming to be associated with the Camden County Board of Taxation and or the State of New Jersey. This agency is sending residents fraudulent notices of tax debt in an attempt to scam residents into paying money that is not actually owed. These fraudulent notices of tax debt have a heading that reads “DISTRAINT WARRANT Tax Assessment Securities Public Judgment Records” and they state that “SEIZURE OR FORFEITURE MAY BE IMMINENT DUE TO NON-PAYMENT OF TAXES”. These notices may include a warning regarding garnishment of wages or bank accounts, revocation of benefits, license suspension or a levy or offset of tax refunds and may also state they are a final judgment or warrant and in order to avoid enforcement the resident must call the number listed on the notice within 15 days or by a certain date and that failure to do so may result in additional penalties, fines and interest. The toll-free number included in these notices is fraudulent and should not be utilized, as these notices are not a legitimate communication from the Camden County Board of Taxation or the State of New Jersey.
